Canary in the Mine

Coal Miners used to use canaries as early warning systems deep in the mines where men worked. Toxic gases (such as carbon monoxide) that could kill men would affect the birds first. If the caged canary passed out or died, the men knew it was time to get out or they would be next!

Our country has been experiencing an explosion of health issues in recent years. Diabetes, to name just one, has reached epidemic levels. I have to admit my own failure at seeing “the writing on the wall” each time I heard the news of yet another friend or family member being diagnosed.

 Until it became personal.

My own diagnosis has caused me to sit up and pay attention. Now that is has become a personal issue, I am forced to learn more about nutrition and have been absolutely flabbergasted at how much that is marketed to us as food is not really food. The old adage of “what you don’t know won’t hurt you” is a flat out lie! Not only is our lack of knowledge hurting us, it is sending many to early graves and complicating their lives in extreme measures. The kicker is that this is not inevitable, as some would suggest, but completely avoidable!

If we would but pay attention.

Read the labels.
Research the ingredients.
If you don't recognize most of the ingredients because they are chemical names, you probably should not be consuming it!
IT’S. NOT. FOOD.

Our food system is tainted. Corruption and politics are at play, to be sure, but so are our insatiable appetites and willingness to look the other way instead of facing truth head-on.
We are a stubborn people. We want what we want…when we want it…and don’t tell us what to do! Don’t tell us what we can’t have!
And we are proclaiming this as we waddle and hobble all the way to our early graves.

The canaries are passing out all around us. It’s time to exit the mine of denial.

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.
1 Corinthians 6:12

Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.
Isaiah 55:1-2

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
John 8:32

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
1 Peter 5:8
