Imagine you receive a bill that is beyond your ability to pay.
Stress, hopelessness, and desperation weigh heavily on your shoulders.
Now imagine that someone steps forward and pays that bill for you.
How do you respond?
Do you say thank you and accept the gracious generosity?
Or do you continue to ignore the gift & keep trying to pay it yourself?
The dishonest teller will gladly keep taking your money, knowing the debt is paid but pocketing his own pockets with the fruits of your blood, sweat and tears.
This is our spiritual reality.
This is what the enemy of God and man does.
He keeps us believing we have to keep working hard to earn our way into Heaven.
Or he keeps us believing there is no hope of Heaven at all.
Both lies minimize the gift Christ freely provides for all who believe in Him.
The most important question you will ever answer is:
Who will you believe?
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
1 Peter 1:3-9
I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
