God wants me to be happy?
Doesn’t He?

“I have to be happy” is a phrase I have heard often
to excuse bad behavior or bad decisions.
God’s definition of happy is sometimes opposite of what we define as happy.

Our definition of happiness is myopic, selfish, short-sighted.

There is a way that appears to be right,
  but in the end it leads to death.
Proverbs 16:25

God’s view of happiness brings freedom; eternal joy.
True happiness is not a mirage.
He sees farther ahead.

The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
Psalm 19:8

You turned my wailing into dancing;
  you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
  LORD my God, I will praise you forever.
Psalm 30:11-12

Light shines on the righteous and joy on the upright in heart.
Psalm 97:11

The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing.
Proverbs 10:28

Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil, but those who promote peace have joy.
Proverbs 12:20

Evildoers are snared by their own sin, but the righteous shout for joy and are glad.
Proverbs 29:6

…and those the LORD has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing;
  everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them,
  and sorrow and sighing will flee away.
Isaiah 35:10

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
John 3:16-17

Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices.
You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come;
but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
John 16:20-22

If your happiness depends upon doing something that directly goes against
the Truth of God’s Word, it’s time to re-evaluate your definition of happy.
Yield to the Lord and He will give you peace and joy that no one else can.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7

This is what the LORD says:
“Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh
and whose heart turns away from the LORD. That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes.
They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”
9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
10 “I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”
Jeremiah 17:5-10
