I believe that every human being has a God-shaped hole inside them.
We all try to fill that space with a variety of different things,
activities, or people.
Some embrace the tenets of religion.
Some seek more and more education, seeking a deeper
wisdom that can only come from the Lord
(who, by the way, is willing to give wisdom to all who ask Him).
“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.’ Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world.”
1 Corinthians 1:18-20
“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
Some seek the company and opinions of other people…
but popularity will not fulfill.
Some seek to soothe and exalt themselves in
patterns that breed empty selfishness.
Nearly anything can become addictions when used to fill the empty place including games, drugs, sex, alcohol, and even exercise.
Some of the things we seek to satisfy ourselves with
can have negative consequences.
Even sadder still is the tendency to blame God for those consequences.
“A man’s own folly ruins his life yet his heart rages against the Lord.”
When we try to fill our God-shaped hole with anything else,
whether it’s good or bad to start with,
if it doesn’t fit that empty place in size and shape,
we will never be satisfied.
