Ugly People

Ugly people irritate me.
I am not speaking of what someone looks like on the outside…
I’m talking about how a person behaves…how they treat other people.

Haughty/arrogant…mean-spirited…
these are very ugly characteristics indeed.

You can be dressed to the nines…
with all the wardrobe pieces high fashion demands…
and still be ugly.

True beauty is not always found in those that
society labels the “beautiful people.”
What the world sees is only the exterior mask, but God looks deeper.

“The LORD does not look at the things people look at.
People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7b

External beauty is meaningless if the attitude that seeps out is ugly.

“All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another,
because, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’”
1 Peter 5:5b

We can be confident in God’s love and grace.
We should be kind, no matter what others do.
We cannot see their hearts.
Sometimes people just have bad days
and ours may be the only smile they see.

Those who are truly ugly on the inside may intend to hurt us,
but retaliation is not our responsibility.

So how do we respond to their ugliness?

“If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;
if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head,
and the LORD will reward you.”
Proverbs 25:21-22

“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
Live in harmony with one another.
Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.
Do not be conceited.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil.
Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath,
for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”
Romans 12:14-19

My Father God still has much work to do on me...as I consistently struggle with how to properly deal with "ugly" personalities.  Little by little, though, He is helping me learn His ways...and I can see they are better than mine.
